Unlike the vanilla renderer GLQuake allowed for advanced graphic features such as linear filtering on textures, shadows, transparent liquids, improved speed, reflective surfaces. It is one of the most known Source ports and many of the modern GL Source ports derivate from it. GLQuake was developed by Id Software, being released to public on January 22, 1997. The port predates the more known GLQuake by one month, John Carmack however feeling frustated by Verité's progamming difficulties, gave up on the Verité focusing on support for non-proprietary API's. One of the oldest known Source ports entitled VQuake was developed by John Carmack, designed for use with the Redition Verité V1000 chipset on late 1996. ClickBOOM developed a port of the game to the Amiga operating system in 1998. Later followed by a Sparc Solaris port later at the same year.Ī Mac OS port was also released, being the first commercially released port done by MacSoft and Lion Entertainement. Ubuntu (and possibly other GNU/Linux distributions) have Yamagi Quake 2 in their software repositories, in Ubuntu it is under the name yamagi-quake2.Before the public release of the source code by Id Software ports were developed with license from the developers, Dave Taylor one of the employees of the company at the time developed the first ever port to the Linux operating system on July 5, 1996. Place all the OGG files in there and voila. In order to playback the music ingame, create a new folder named "music" inside the baseq2 folder located inside the root Quake II directory. Go here for both Quake and Quake II's soundtracks. The source port supports external music files, meaning the Quake II Soundtrack can be used without the original CD's audio files.
